There are more than 1,000 species of bats around the world. You can find them in just about any type of environment, except regions that are extremely hot or cold. Bats are typically small, but their wings can be as wide as 2 feet when fully grown.
Bats use a biological sonar system called echolocation that allows them to find prey, despite their poor vision. Their diet consists mostly of insects, but many species of bat eat fruit. Female bats give birth to one offspring per year, which stays with the mother for two weeks until they are able to fly. Bats grow to be mature by the time they are two years old and can live as long as 30 years.
Bats are nocturnal and spend most of the day sleeping. They sleep by hanging upside down and wrapping themselves in their wings. Bats make their homes in dark environments, such as caves and other moist areas. Most often, they migrate during the winter but have been known to stay put and hibernate.
